July

1st Week of July

Annuals, Perennials, Shrubs, Trees, and Lawns

  • Keep an eye out for insects and diseases.

2nd Week of July

Annuals, Perennials, Shrubs, Trees, and Lawns

  • Continue your basic maintenance: water, fertilize, stake, and train.
  • Watch Ivory Halo dogwoods for drying up. The leaves will curl, get black spots, and fall off if they do not receive adequate moisture through the hot months.
  • To conserve water, allow established lawns to go dormant during hot dry periods. Move the height of cut up to 3.5 inches plus and cut only as needed.
  • Make sure new lawns and sod are watered to keep them green and growing until they have matured.

3rd Week of July

Trees, Perennials, and Shrubs

  • Pay attention to new plantings for water needs.
  • Prune arborvitaes, yews, and junipers after new growth has expanded. This pruning should take place only once-per-year.

4th Week of July

Annuals, Trees, Perennials, and Shrubs

  • Take pictures of things you like.
  • Be ready to start deadheading day lilies and salvia as their blooms fade.
  • Touch up shrubs and hedges as they need it.
