September

1st Week of September

Lawns and Perennials

  • Cooler temperatures start the lawn repair/renovation season in earnest.
  • Continue to cut down perennials as their flowers become spent.

2nd Week of September

Annuals, Lawns, Perennials, Shrubs, and Trees

  • Push the summer annuals with water and fertilizer as they are just about finished.
  • Aerating to benefit soil conditions can be done as the lawn goes into its fall growth period.
  • DO NOT apply any more fertilizer on perennials for the year. DO NOT encourage any more growth.
  • Transplant things you want moved.

3rd Week of September

Annuals, Lawns, Perennials, Shrubs, and Trees

  • Plant cold hardy annuals such as pansies, ornamental kale, and mums. Use them to fill in underperforming spots in other annuals.
  • Fall fertilizer and weed control for your lawn should be started after the 15th.
  • Fall is the best time for perennial weed control. After the first hard frost is a pretty standard window of when they are actively growing and can be easily killed.
  • Now is a great time to transplant peonies and iris.
  • No major pruning should happen until dormancy.

4th Week of September

Annuals, Lawns, Perennials, Shrubs, and Trees

  • Begin to bring in any tropical plants like hibiscus, citrus trees, and house plants. Treat with a systemic.
  • Try to wrap up seeding by the 20th so plants have time to establish before freeze up.
  • There is still plenty of time for sod.
  • Finalize your touch up trimming.
  • Begin tree planting toward the end of the month. Mulch them in and make sure they are watered.
